Clothing Company Fined $135,000 Over Chemical Burns

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

A court has fined a Seymour clothing business $135,000 over the injury of two workers from chemical burns.

WorkSafe Victoria says Flame Safe Fabric Specialists failed to provide adequate protective equipment and training to staff.

It says chemical splashed into a worker's eye and another employee suffered burns to his face.

The acting executive director, Stan Krpan, says it is a reminder to employers to provide a safe workplace.

"It's actually not that hard to comply with the law, the standards are pretty clear," he said.

"A lot of them are based on commonsense, label dangerous goods, make sure you've got the right equipment, make sure your workers are properly trained and they know the equipment and goods they're dealing with so that they can take the appropriate precaution and of course make sure they've got access to equipment and protective materials."

EasyOHS comment:

EasyOHS has a comprehensive system for managing chemical compliance.  This includes a hazardous susbstance register, MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) link and much more.

Chemicals are a mandatory compliance area and risk controls must be used as per the MSDS and risk assessment for the product.

Chemicals have the potential to cause horrific injuries and fatalities, so compliance is not negotiable.

Ask youself a few key questions:

1)  Do you have a hazardous substance register?

2)  Do you have MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for hazardous subtances?

3)  Are any chemicals carcenogenic, or cause long term health effects?

4)  Are risk assessments in place for the use of the substance?

5)  Has training, instruction regarding the danger, and safe use of the substance been provided?

6)  Is the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) supplied and used when handling / using hazardous substances?

7)  Are all chemicals labelled and stored safely?
