Ex - Mortuary Worker Seeks Trauma Compensation

Tuesday, May 04, 2010

A far north Queensland court has begun hearing the case of a former Queensland Health employee who alleges she suffered psychological trauma from working at the Cairns Base Hospital's mortuary. Amy Handel is suing the department for damages after claiming she witnessed "chilling" scenes including the rough handling of bodies by mortuary staff during autopsies.

Ms Handel is making a WorkCover compensation claim in the Industrial Magistrates Court in Cairns.

The court has heard the former mortuary assistant did not receive a "proper induction'' before starting work at the mortuary and that she has been unable to return to work since mid-2008.

The hearing continues.
