Farm safety warning as harvest looms

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

WorkSafe has issued more than 200 safety improvement notices in the first three months of a year long farm safety campaign.

Farming has been Victoria's most dangerous industry in the past year, with 10 workplace deaths, including fatalities at Rainbow and Donald so far this year.

Spokeswoman Charlotte Bull says many of the infringements found so far have been for unguarded equipment and that is a concern as harvest approaches.

"As we've heard it's possible Victoria is going to experience one [of] the bigger crops on record and I think it's definitely a time for farmers to think about the consequences of that and one of the main issues could be around checking silo safety and making sure there's no issues around corrosion or things like that," she said.
