Man Crushed By 300kg Steel Plates

A man remains in a stable condition after 300 kilograms of steel fell on his legs during a workplace accident in far north Queensland.

The 21-year-old was unloading steel plates from a shipping container at Myola Road in Kuranda, west of Cairns, when the metal plates fell on him.

He was airlifted to the Cairns Base Hospital with fractures to both legs.

We have talked previously about the need for extreme caution when loading / unloading or working near suspended loads.

Key issues include:

1)  Strictly enforced exclusion zones under or near suspended loads
2)  Ticketed and competent crane operators and dogman
3)  All cranes and lifting gear in register and inspected as per requirements of relevant standards
4)  Loads correctly slung
5)  Packaging in good order (not damaged)

There are no second chances if someone is caught under a suspended load....
