Man Killed Using Hydraulic Hoist - Panel Beating Premises

A man in his 40s has died in a workplace accident on Queensland's Gold Coast. Police say he was using a hydraulic hoist at a panel beaters at Bundall when he suffered fatal head injuries around 10am AEST.

Police and Workplace Health and Safety officers are investigating.

Details of this cause of death are not available at this time, however it is a timely reminder to consider if your safe work procedures (JSA or SWMS) are in order and used.

Stored energy in the form of suspended loads, be it using a crane, winch, trolley jack or other lifting equipment is an ever present threat. 

Key considerations:

1)  Persons should not (at any time) work under a suspended load.

What is a suspended load?

A suspended load is a load that is being lifted, or supported using a mechanical lifting device (such as a crane, winch, hoist or jack). 

2)  Where persons are using hoists or jacks, locking pins or hard stands should be used so the mechanical / hydraulic systems are not the only layer of defence in case of equipment failure.  

3) If you are placing your body on the line - you need to make sure the supports are capable of supporting the load being lifted. 

4) Use tag lines when lifting items with a crane, and ensure that no person enters the drop zone. 

5) Ensure all lifting equipment has the SWL (Safe working load) displayed and is serviced, tagged (where required) and that all hooks, chains and slings are in good order and condition. 

6) Do not use ad-hoc screws, bolts, clips that are not load rated

Remember suspended loads have a huge amount of stored energy that can easily cause a serious injury or fatality.  Don't take the risk.
