Worksafe Victoria Urges Farm Caution on Safety

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Victoria's workplace safety regulator is concerned about the number of deaths on farms across the state. WorkSafe Victoria says a farm fatality in the state's north this week is the sixth this year so far. A 15 tonne silo fell on a 33-year-old farmer as he climbed it to check the grain level at his Wyuna property.

Charlotte Bull from WorkSafe urges farmers to be extra careful around such structures.

"Things like windmills, feed bins and fuel tanks ... [farmers need] to have a really close look at any signs of corrosion or structural damage. If you're unsure if a structure is safe it needs to be checked by someone who's competent," she said.

The five other fatalities this year involved tractors and quad bikes, and a father and son were electrocuted when moving a windmill in the southern Mallee.
