Warning Issued to Tasmanian Forest Workers

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Tasmania's workplace safety authority fears forest contractors are cutting safety corners to save money in tough economic times.

Workplace Standards has stepped up surprise safety inspections after a string of serious chainsaw injuries.

Roy Ormerod of Workplace Standards says 11 forest workers have injured their feet in chainsaw accidents in the last six years and employers who flaunt safety laws will be fined.

"Injury results in work time lost which ups the cost of running a business," he said.

"It's a false economy to sacrifice safety for deadline because at the end of the day it costs the business more through injuries."
