Interstate mine deaths spark safety alert

Tuesday, March 04, 2014

Queensland's Mines Safety Commissioner says he has serious concerns about the number of contractors who have been killed on Australian sites.

In the past six months, seven people have been killed on mine sites around the country, with the most fatalities in Western Australia.

Queensland commissioner Stewart Bell has issued a safety alert to the state industry, saying the increase in deaths is "disturbing" and the rate of the loss of life is unacceptable.

Mr Bell says while Queensland is not represented in the latest figures, contractors are generally overrepresented in fatal mining accidents.

He says mine operators, site senior executives and managers must understand that effective management of contractors is part of their key obligations.

Mr Bell says a single safety and health management system for each mine is the best way to manage workers, contractors and risks.
